What is Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca has a long history of use in traditional medicine in the Amazon. It is a psychoactive drink obtained from the mixture of mainly two plants: chacruna (psychotria viridis), a shrub with elongated green leaves containing dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and Ayahuasca (banisteriopsis caapi). The chacruna is a shrub of the Solanaceae family, while ayahuasca is a vine of the Rubiaceae family.
Ayahuasca has also been traditionally used in the religious and spiritual context of indigenous areas. It is believed that it can help us connect with the spiritual world and explore other planes of existence, find inner peace and reconcile with ourselves.
