Karma Yoga: What you sow you reap

Karma yoga or the "discipline of action" is a form of yoga based on the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred scripture of Hinduism. Karma yoga is understood as a yoga of selfless or altruistic service, taught by Zen masters who promote tranquility. Of the three paths to realization, karma yoga is the process of attaining perfection in action. It is also said to be the most effective way to progress in spiritual life.

The concept

Karma yoga is an action-oriented way of acting and thinking in conformity with duty (dharma), regardless of personal selfish desires. Simply put, one does not get emotionally involved in the action one performs; one should avoid getting excited, upset or angry when the result of the act is not as expected. Krishna explains that work done without selfish expectations purifies the mind and, little by little, makes an individual able to see the value that reason has in itself. He further states that it is not necessary to be in external solitude, or to remain without action, in order to practice a spiritual life, since the state of action or inaction is determined primarily in the mind.

Karma

Like other philosophies of Hinduism, karma yoga is based on a general understanding of karma and reincarnation. It is believed that a man is born with certain tendencies (sanskaras) from his previous lives, both positive and negative, which push him toward performing certain actions in his present. This process continues until the individual reaches a balance of zero (no remaining karma) where he can attain liberation. This liberation is called Moksha at the moment a person manages to break the cycle of Samsara (a cycle of constant death and rebirth).

Karma in our lives

We can all strive to live in a more altruistic way. Karma is a branch of yoga, as important as hatha yoga (or more so) for living in a fulfilling and spiritual way. Many yoga studios offer "Karma Yoga" classes whose benefits go to help less fortunate people.
