Alexandra Mejía is an Internist and a doctor in Palliative Care with more than 15 years of experience dedicated to caring for patients in the final stage of their life, working in hospital and home Palliative Care units and in nursing homes.
She has been a practicing Buddhist for 25 years, receiving teachings from Tibetan teachers, such as Lama Zopa Rinpoche, H.S. the Dalai Lama, H.S. Sakya Trizin, Geshe Jampa Gyatso, Tulku Lobsang Rimpoche, and other teachers of Tibetan Buddhism. She has also conducted Buddhist meditation and tantra retreats under the guidance of Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
She is the founder and coordinator of the Potala Hospice Association, a volunteer group that offers support and accompaniment to advanced chronic patients. The Association currently has three groups of volunteers in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Potala Hospice is currently linked to the FPMT (Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition) as a group under the auspices of Karuna Hospice (Australia).
