Nori seaweed is a Japanese term used to refer to edible varieties of seaweed from the various species of red seaweed. The history of nori seaweed is very old, there are texts from the eighth century that speak of this seaweed as a form of taxation. Its size is small and it can also be eaten raw but it should be consumed within a day, in this case, because it oxidizes easily. Nori also refers to food products created from this seaweed.

What is nori seaweed sheet?

The final product is made by cutting the seaweed into strips and drying them in a process similar to paper. The result is a black sheet that changes color as it is cooked. Nori is generally used for rolling nigiri and sushi but there are other ways to eat it. It is also a condiment that can be found in powdered and ready-made form.

In Japan more than 600 km2 of coastal coastline are used to produce tons of this vegetable, the production and processing of nori is an advanced form of agriculture and is led by this country followed by China. Japan is the country with the highest consumption of seaweed per capita in the world. Nori seaweed grows in all oceans from cold to temperate seas.

Even today seaweed is a novelty in our diet, but more and more people are introducing it because of its high content of proteins, minerals and vitamins, being recognized as a food of great nutritional value. They also provide a touch of sea flavor increasingly appreciated and give a lot of play in the kitchen.

Nori seaweed is not suitable for everyone, because of its high iodine content, its consumption should be avoided if you suffer from hyperthyroidism, if you are taking anticoagulant drugs and moderate its consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Nutritional properties of Nori seaweed

  • Contains provitamin A: ideal for maintaining healthy and strong hair, as well as to protect nails against the appearance of stretch marks.
  • Its high content of antioxidant vitamins makes it an essential food for healthy skin.
  • Traditional Chinese medicine considers it a cooling plant, beneficial for balancing conditions such as hypertension, heartburn, or the effects of menopause.
  • It has a large amount of carotenoids, confirming its antioxidant properties. Its content in calcium and iodine, makes its consumption indicated for the smallest of the house, to have a healthy and strong growth.
  • Its vitamins neutralize and prevent the formation of free radicals involved in cellular aging.
  • It is rich in potassium and calcium as well as other minerals, so it is recommended to eat it in small quantities to have a balanced intake, especially indicated in diets for athletes.
