What is Ashtanga Mysore?

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a system of Yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009).

This method consists of synchronising the breath with a progressive series of postures, which generates internal heat resulting in sweat that helps eliminate toxins and purifies the body, mind and nervous system. Developing strength, flexibility, endurance and a general sense of well-being.

The daily practice of Mysore yoga brings continuous growth through repetition of the asanas, challenging your mind and body, discovering something new about the posture and yourself.

The Mysore style is named after the city in which Sri K Pattabhi Jois lived and taught, continuing the teaching style of his teacher, T. Krishnamacharya.

This style of Yoga is transmitted in the Parampara tradition.

Parampara, or lineage, is the tradition based on spiritual relationship and guidance where teachings are transmitted from a Guru (Master) to a Sisya (disciple). Such knowledge is imparted through the relationship that develops between the guru and the disciple. This relationship is considered, based on the authenticity of the Guru, and the respect, commitment, devotion and obedience of the student, to be the best way to transmit the most advanced knowledge. The student eventually masters the knowledge that the Guru embodies.

Mysore style Ashtanga is characterised by the fact that the postures are taught sequentially allowing students to develop at a pace that is suitable for each individual, and not everyone has to be at the same level. This makes it ideal for those new to yoga or those with specific physical and health conditions.
